Chestnut Class

In Chestnut Class, learning is fun, exciting and frequently guided by the children’s interests. Our classroom is a safe and friendly learning environment in which the children feel happy and confident, enabling their learning.

In maths, the children are encouraged to use concrete apparatus and engage in practical activities which allows them to acquire a secure understanding of mathematical concepts. When developing their skills in maths, pupils are encouraged to determine their own level of challenge by independently selecting questions and problems of increasing difficulty. Once the children are confident with basic concepts, they access reasoning and problem solving challenges. The children thoroughly enjoy completing interesting and meaningful problems that relate to the world around them.

Studies in English are based around a core text which is chosen because it will be enjoyed by the children and links to the Big Idea. Sometimes the children have the text read to them out loud but often they will read in small groups, with their peers or independently. The children have the opportunity to engage with the text in a variety of ways such as, for example, looking at vocabulary, characters and plot through drama, role play and a variety of writing activities. As they progress, they learn a variety of skills such as punctuating direct speech, prepositions, adverbs and conjunctions. This leads on to their own writing where these skills are confidently applied by the children.

Science and the foundation subjects are accessed through the Big Idea that is explored by all year groups. Each week, the children progress along their learning journey and explore various aspects of the wider curriculum through a range of self-chosen activities, school trips and external subject experts. The children love learning through this innovative approach and have the opportunity to be challenged through higher order questioning.
